Specialized HONORS Programs Curriculum International TESOL offers a number of Specialized HONORS programs aimed at qualifying the candidate to teach English to specific segments of the non-English speaking market. Present programs available are:
Candidates who aspire to be new entrants to the field may vary in age, education, and experience- ranging from young new graduates to mature early retirees who have many years of experience. In one or more specific fields. Admission Requirements: Due to the anticipated high demand for these programs, priority will be given to students and graduates of International TESOL College (I.T.C.) in the first 3 months of the programs, April 1 to June 30, 2005. Candidates who are not I.T.C. students or graduates are also invited to apply, recognizing that their acceptance may be deferred for a short period of time to accommodate I.T.C. applicants. Minimum Qualifications: All International TESOL College entrants must have completed the Basic enhanced TESOL program, either live in- class or online. They must also have a displayed knowledge or interest in the specific field applying to. Non- ITC graduates must be a minimum of 18 years old, a high school graduate or equivalent and have a displayed knowledge or interest in the specific TESOL field applying to. Program Description: Time required to complete the program. The candidate will have a maximum of 12 months to complete the entire course. ITC or graduates of other TESOL courses with advance credits will have a maximum of 6 months to fulfill all established additional requirements Common Thread Courses All Specialized HONORS TESOL programs share a Common Thread. The knowledge and skills and gained through these studies have been identified as the generic skills most needed to teach English worldwide.. Part 1 ( advance credit possible) Basic Enhanced TESOL course or equivalent. Part 2 ( advance credit possible) English Grammar Refresher course Part 3 ( advance credit possible) Major course in teaching children or adults (1 only) Part 4 International Leadership-A- Developing Leadership Skills Critical thinking, Decision-making, Problem solving Part 5 Exploring International Opportunities Exploration of international opportunities in your specialization. Part 6 Specialized Essay. Prerequisite: Successful completion of all required Common Thread credits is required prior to undertaking the Discipline-specific Specialized Essay. The essay will be between ten and fifteen double spaced type written pages. Students must choose one writing style and ensure that citations and references are consistent. Recommended style manuals include: The Chicago Manual of Styles; and A Manual for Writers of Term Papers, Theses and Dissertations by Kate L. Turabian. The essay must be submitted in proper academic form with bibliography. All sources must be properly cited. 1) THE TITLE PAGE of the Specialized Essay must include; the title of the research study, the authors name, the name of the Faculty and the College; and the date of completion. 2) AN ABSTRACT of 50-75 words must follow the title page. The abstract summarizes the contents of the Specialized Essay; identifies the areas of research, and*Mandatory discusses the principal findings and the conclusions. 3) ACKNOWLEDGEMENT may be made by the student, recognizing person(s) who assisted in some way to bring the work to completion. 4) A TABLE OF CONTENTS is necessary in this formal document. The Essay should be arranged by: CHAPTERS and SUB-HEADINGS MUST BE USED. Specialized Essay Every specialization has specific knowledge and skill. The application of that knowledge and skill will vary depending on local conditions. ie. athletics, Christianity, Information Technology, Business ,Tourism etc. Select two countries of interest to for your specialized topic , excluding your country of origin / education. Ideally, the characteristics of the two counties should differ. (*Characteristics: e.g. geographical location, relative wealth, etc). Example- what is it like to be an athlete, businessman etc. in the following two countries? 1- Sri Lanka 2- Saudi Arabia Compare and contrast teaching in your specialization in each of the two countries, applying your specialized knowledge and skills, with teaching in your country of origin / education. In your research, determine how the real-life application of your knowledge and skill will be affected by important variables, such as the following: Climate Language Culture including local customs and values, and the role of gender. The availability of material resources ,the availability of human resources, access to professional knowledge and expertise (professional support) Expected outcomes -productivity, quality, positive change, etc. Discuss the leadership skills and strengths that you believe would be important instruments to employ around key issues while teaching and living in a foreign country. Graduation Requirements In addition to satisfying the requirements of the Faculty of TESOL candidates for graduation must satisfy the Academic Regulations of International TESOL College. Each candidate for graduation must prepare and submit his / her International Resume, complete with a sample Letter of Introduction, and recent photograph. Additionally, each candidate must prepare and submit a personalized plan for securing an employment position. In their speciality. Guidelines will be provided upon completion of sufficient credits for graduation. |
